Merit was Principal Contractor for this fast-track new build project requiring turnkey D&B for the building, laboratories and offices.
The URS requirements from the client were developed by Merit into a full design for planning and construction to satisfy safety, local authority, regulatory, environmental and manufacturing requirements. The design and construction of the two building, laboratory and the offices were undertaken by in house Merit staff.
The project was a Portal Steel framed building with concrete floors located, in this case, on top of an existing multi-storey car park. Use of high insulation materials ensured an energy efficient facility. Design of the building and remedial works to the foundation structure of the car park were critical design aspects of this project as its location is adjacent to the main East Coast rail link.
Speed of construction was paramount to the project's success – with the works completing in 19 weeks. Merit utilised 3D modelling to increase the speed of the installation. The 3D model facilitated planning, space management of the fit-out and full co-ordination of services & utilities to improve scheduling. This approach also enabled pre-fabrication and modularisation of services to improve programme, quality and Health & Safety.
